When participating in the Helping Children with Loss program, you will be welcomed into an open, non-judgmental group atmosphere where you can ask questions and fully participate in the learning process.
As part of the process, face-to-face and online, participants may be asked to separate into small breakout groups to go over the weekly assignments. If more than one family member attends the program, each will be assigned different breakout rooms to facilitate the cross-pollination of ideas and ensure privacy.
Unlike the other programs offered by the Grief Recovery Institute, which focuses on personal loss and recovery from grief, this educational program is designed to give parents and others tools to help children. You may come into this program to work on a specific loss faced by your child; Dr. Watson will lead you through the process of looking at all the emotional losses that could touch a child’s heart and give you the tools to help them successfully navigate through. You will work with sample situations and learn how to deal effectively with various children’s emotional reactions.
Although you are working in a group setting, your personal focus will be on learning how to work with your own child.
You will be expected to complete all the reading and homework assignments.
You will want a notebook and a writing utensil to take notes and complete any homework. A copy of the class text When Children Grieve will be provided to you.
Keep in mind that if you miss a session, it will be necessary to reschedule your missed session with me. In some cases, this may incur a fee.
Online Meeting Requirements
To have the best experience in this class, you will need a stable internet connection, a webcam, a microphone, and access to the Zoom platform. Zoom has various pricing options, but there is a free version, and this is the recommended platform for use.
For best conditions, it is recommended not to use a mobile phone because of the limited screen viewing of the entire group.
Confidentiality
While all sessions are completely confidential, there are confidentiality expectations as required by law. These include:
- If there is a risk of harm to self or others, Dr. Watson will notify the proper authority as required by law and directed by the Grief Recovery Institute policy.
- If a court order should be presented to the Grief Institute or Dr. Watson, you will be advised of the need to disclose it to the authorities and if the order requires compliance.
